Disk Repair fixes corrupted software that is preventing the hard drive from functioning properly. When a hard drive is formatted, software is installed onto the drive for use by an operating system, its applications and the data saved to the drive. Or just to hold data as with an external drive. Any of this software can corrupt with use, rendering the device unusable, but not physically damaged. In such a case, disk repair is called for.
Unlike data recovery, disk repair is a process where the file corruption is repaired without having to copy anything to a backup hard drive. The process requires specially prepared hardware and software and can usually be performed within the time frame of a typical onsite tech support visit. One thing to know, just like when staying in the hospital, bad things can happen when any maintenance or repair is performed on a computer. So even with disk repair, it is recommended to back up your computer data.
Disk Repair fee: $125
I forgot, there is a second thing to know. No matter what anyone tells you, doctoring a computer is not always an exact science. It is not uncommon that a “successful” disk repair will still leave the hard drive unworkable. Go figure. When this happens I recommend a backup of your data, followed by a reinstall of the operating system. If you already have a backup, the price will be less. If not, a new backup will have to be discussed before moving forward.
OS Reinstall fee: $125
A more extreme procedure would be to reformat (erase!) the drive and reinstall the Operating System. Your backup is then restored back to your hard drive. As is the case so often, the existence of a backup and its size will affect the final price.
Reformat, OS install & Restoration fee: $325
